International Students

The procedure for updating your visa documentation with a name or nationality change differs depending on whether you are in the UK or overseas. You must ensure that you follow the relevant instructions for your situation as outlined below.

Please contact the International Student Office if you require further clarification.

I'm outside the UK and have changed my name

If you have changed your name and you are outside the UK you can apply for a BRP replacement single entry visa before returning to the country. This will allow you to enter the country with your passport containing your new name

Once in the UK you will need to apply to change your BRP to your new name by following the instructions below in ‘I’m inside the UK and have changed my name’

I'm inside the UK and have changed my name

You must apply for a new BRP and are required to do this within 3 months by making an application online. Follow the instructions to ‘update replace or transfer your biometric residence permit’

The fee for this is £161 and there is also a charge to book an appointment to enrol your biometrics (see below).

You are required to attend an appointment to enrol your biometrics within 45 days of submitting your online application.

The Home Office uses UK Visas and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) to manage the appointment system. Appointments are offered in different locations and the cost varies depending on the service and location you select. Appointments are subject to availability and there may not be available at your preferred location. The appointment can be booked at either a Core Service Point or an Enhanced Service Point:

An appointment to have your passport scanned and enrol your biometrics at a Core Service Points is free of charge. The nearest Core Service Point is in Croydon, London.

There is an Enhanced Service Point in Cambridge Central Library in the Grand Arcade. There is an additional £60 charge to book an appointment. Appointments available outside of core hours may be available at an increased charge.

You are advised to upload any supporting documents as part of your online application prior to your appointment as you may be charged an additional fee to have supporting documents uploaded at the appointment.

I am outside the UK and have changed my nationality

If your passport under your previous nationality is rescinded then you will need to apply for a BRP replacement single entry visa. This will allow you to enter the UK under your new nationality and passport.

Once in the UK you’ll need to apply to change your BRP to your new nationality, by applying online by following the instructions below in ‘I’m inside the UK and have changed my nationality’.

If you gain a new nationality from overseas and you retain both passports and both nationalities as a dual national, the Home Office advises that you should be able to enter the UK carrying both passports and your BRP without making a new application from overseas.

If, once you return to the UK, you wish to change your BRP to your new nationality you must do so by completing a Transfer of Conditions application within 3 months. Follow the instructions below for ‘I’m inside the UK and have changed my nationality’.

You must notify UKVI of this via a Change in Circumstances form and you are required to do this within 3 months. Page 3 of the form contains guidance on what to do if you have received a new passport.

You must take your new passport to your College Tutorial Office so a scan can be obtained and uploaded to your student record.

You should do this within 7 days of receiving the new passport. You should visit the Parkside Police Station but you do not need to make an appointment.
