BRPs are only being issued as valid until 31 December 2024 even if your course and visa continue after this date. By the end of the year, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) are replacing BRPs with an online proof of immigration status called an eVisa.

Accessing your eVisa

Students who have a BRP that does not cover the full length of their immigration permission will need to create a UKVI account in order to access their eVisa, an online record of their immigration status. Further information and instructions on how to access your eVisa is provided on the government website.

You will need to create an account to access your eVisa by the end of the year, but are advised to do so as soon as possible so you don't forget.

UKVI information videos

UKVI has produced three short videos to explain the change to eVisas:

  • What is an eVisa?
  • How to create a UKVI account to access an eVisa
  • How to travel with your eVisa

Checking your eVisa

Your eVisa will confirm the full duration of your immigration permission. You should check that this reflects your expiry date accurately. Your visa should have been granted until the end date as stated in the CAS used to support your student visa application plus:

  • an additional four months for undergraduate and PhD courses;
  • an additional two months for Masters courses of 12 months or less;
  • an additional four months for Masters courses lasting 12 months or more;
  • an additional two months for other courses lasting less than 12 months, e.g. exchange students

Once you have your eVisa, you will be able to provide time-limited access to your online immigration status with third parties if required by generating a share code. UKVI advises to take your BRP with you when you travel overseas whilst it remains valid. This may make returning to the UK easier at immigration control during the transition period.
