A Turing Scheme grant is provided as a contribution towards the cost of living whilst undertaking a period of mobility abroad. It is not intended to cover all expenses.

The amount is based on the duration of the period of study or unpaid work placement. The start date of the mobility period is the first date that the participant needs to be present at the host institution/organisation. The end date of the period is the last day the participant needs to be present at the receiving institution/organisation. This is confirmed in the paperwork signed by the host institution/organisation. The specific amount a student will receive, as well as the terms and conditions, will be set out in a grant agreement signed by the student. If the placement ends earlier than specified in the student's Grant Agreement, the financial support will be reduced accordingly.

If a student application for funding is approved, the grant is paid after the required documentation has been returned, minus £100. This final amount will be paid at the end of the mobility period, on receipt of the final paperwork and subject to any changes in duration of activity. The grant will be paid in pounds sterling into a UK bank account.

Turing Scheme funding cannot be provided for costs that are being financially supported by another source.

Grant Rates

The grant rate varies depending on the destination country and whether you meet the criteria under the scheme for additional support as a student from a disadvantaged background.

Countries are grouped into three categories as outlined on our Turing Scheme country categories webpage.

The rates that will be provided are:

Country group Period Rates
Group 1 Placements lasting 4-8 weeks £136.25 per week
Groups 2&3 Placements lasting 4-8 weeks £120 per week
Group 1 Placements lasting longer than 2 months £380 per month
Groups 2&3 Placements lasting longer than 2 months £335 per month

Please note that placements lasting nine weeks to twelve months will receive the rates identified for this category for the full duration of the mobility and not the higher rates for the initial period of eight weeks.

Additional Financial Support

Students who meet the specific criteria for additional financial support will be entitled to receive a higher cost of living grant as outlined below:

Country group Period Rates
Group 1 Placements lasting 4-8 weeks £163.75 per week
Groups 2&3 Placements lasting 4-8 weeks £147.50 per week
Group 1 Placements lasting longer than 2 months £490 per month
Groups 2&3 Placements lasting longer than 2 months £445 per month

Students who meet the criteria for additional financial support will also receive funding as a contribution towards the travel costs for a return journey. This is based on receipted costs up to a maximum limit for each destination. Those who meet the criteria to be eligible for funding for their travel expenses under the Turing Scheme do not qualify for a travel grant through the Student Support Regulations to cover the same costs.

Students with a household income of £25,000 or less, meet the criteria for this additional financial support. Students who will be funded under the Turing Scheme will be asked in the online registration form used for the grant agreement whether this is applicable to their circumstances and this information will be verified using records held centrally at the University.

Other criteria to be eligible for this additional financial support is outlined below. If a student meets one or more of the criteria outlined and their household income is not £25,000 or less, please email the International Student Office to provide this information. The International Student Office will then check the information with the College.
