Opening a bank account
There is a wide choice of banks in the UK, and many have branches in Cambridge. Most international students will open a basic or current bank account which provides:
- a debit card
- online banking
This type of account is usually free, but additional fees may apply for one-off services or additional benefits.
Typically, the application for a new account starts online, but if you’re unsure and you’re opening an account with a bank that has a branch in Cambridge, you can visit in person for assistance.
To open an account you will usually need:
- your passport
- evidence of your immigration status
You may need:
- evidence of your UK address (most banks will accept a letter from your College)
For most students, the process to open a bank account in the UK is straightforward. However, each application is assessed individually by the bank, and approval is not guaranteed.
It is advisable to ensure you have access to funds you can use for your initial expenses during the first few weeks in the UK in case it takes some time to make all the arrangements for your new bank account.
If you are under 18, you may need to follow a different process. Your chosen bank will be able to advise you on this.
You will be sent your debit card and PIN (a 4‑digit code) separately.
The debit card will enable you to use contactless payments in shops up to £100, although you may need to use the PIN the first time to activate it.
Alternatively, you can usually add your card to your mobile phone’s virtual wallet to make contactless payments with your phone.
You can usually download an online banking app to manage your account. Your chosen bank will have information about online banking on their website.
Bank directory

This is not an exhaustive list of options available but is intended as a guide to help you consider and compare some of the main banks students use to open bank accounts.
This information serves as guidance and is not a recommendation or endorsement of any bank. While the comparison chart provides answers to some questions, if you have any specific queries regarding your personal circumstances and needs, contact the bank directly, either by phone or by visiting the branch in person.
